Classics is the study of languages, literature, history, art, and archaeology of ancient civilisations, thus making it a perfect compliment to history. Knowledge and study of the ancient world was vitally important in later periods of history. Knowledge of the classical world is an important tool for historians of all periods, places, and themes. We offer an exceptionally wide range of courses, covering: historical periods from the early Middle Ages to the contemporary worldgeographical regions including Britain and Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas Our history courses also cover a wide variety of approaches to the past, including: political historycultural historysocial historyeconomic historyintellectual historygender historyglobal and transnational history On the classics side of the programme, you will be able to study Latin language and literature or Greek language and literature.
