Overview
Infectious disease is a major challenge to society in the developed and developing worlds.
Our infectious diseases programme investigates the microorganisms that cause disease in humans and animals and how a host responds to infection.
It brings together the study of:
bacteriologyvirologyimmunologymolecular biology
You will study:
the interaction between microorganisms and hostsinfection processeshow microbes cause disease
We can apply this knowledge to the development of prevention and therapeutic strategies, such as:
antibioticsantiviral agentsvaccines
In Years 1 and 2 of your BSc (Hons) degree, you will complete a broad programme of study in biomedical sciences. This structure is shared by all our undergraduate Biomedical Sciences degree programmes.
We introduce you to Infectious Diseases in your Year 1 and 2 compulsory courses.
Specialisation in Infectious Diseases will begin in Year 3. In your final year, you will focus on this discipline.
