Sociology examines how individual choices are affected by wider social forces, and how they can be understood by placing them in their social context. You will study: the relationship between individuals and groupsissues of belonging and identitythe social causes of cooperation and conflictthe way societies and social institutions are formed and change over time You will also learn to compare different national contexts and understand contemporary social issues from a global perspective. One quarter of your study time in this programme will be devoted to quantitative methods. You will learn how to research sociological issues by using data in a practical setting. This programme offers you the opportunity to apply to undertake an internship, allowing you to gain practical experience and further strengthen your skills. Q-Step was developed as a strategic response to the shortage of quantitatively skilled social science graduates. It was originally funded by the Nuffield Foundation, the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). The Q-Step Centre is now an established part of the University of Edinburgh.
